Red Alert: Understanding the Causes of Red Eyes

Red eyes occur when the small blood vessels on the surface of the eye become swollen or irritated. It can be a symptom of many different eye conditions.

 Redness:

  • The most obvious sign is a reddening of the white part of the eye.

 Discharge:

  • In cases of infection, there may be a clear, white or yellowish discharge.

 Watering:

  • Eyes may produce excess tears.
