MYOPIA CONTROL

Myopia Control: Vision for The Long Run: Preserve Your Kids Vision

What is Myopia?

  • Myopia, commonly known as near-sightedness, is a vision condition where objects close to you appear clear, but objects farther away are blurry
  • Occurs when the eyeball is too long, causing light rays to focus at a point in front of the retina

What is Myopia control?

Specific treatments to slow the progression of myopia in kids. The goal is to reduce the rate at which myopia worsens, potentially decreasing the risk of more serious eye health issues later in life.

Treatments

Eyeglasses and contact lenses

Standard treatment involves corrective glasses or contact lenses that help focus light correctly on the retina.

Myopia control lenses

Unique lens design to manage eye growth and prevent rapid myopia progression in children and young adults.

Orthokeratology (“Ortho-K”)

Wearing specially designed rigid contact lenses overnight that temporarily reshape the cornea.

Low-dose atropine eye drops

Using a very low concentration of atropine drops can slow the progression of myopia in some children.

Managing myopia

Encouraging outdoor time

Increased outdoor time has been associated with a reduced risk of developing myopia.

Monitor screen time

Limiting the amount of time spent on close-up activities like screens or books may help manage progression.

Regular eye exams

Early detection and ongoing monitoring are crucial for effective management of myopia.

When to see a doctor:

  • If your child complains about blurry distance vision or needs to sit closer to see clearly.
  • Regular eye check-ups are recommended to monitor eye health and update prescriptions as needed.
