GLAUCOMA

Vision Under Pressure: Combat Glaucoma Head-on

Glaucoma is an eye conditions caused by abnormally high pressure in your eye that damage the optic nerve, which can lead to vision loss

Causes

 Hereditary:

  • The most common cause is an increase in pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure.

 Eye shape:

  • In many cases, glaucoma runs in families.

 Other risk factors:

  • Age, especially for those over 60.
  • History of eye injuries
  • Certain medical conditions like diabetes and cataracts can increase the risk.

Signs and symptoms

Gradual loss of peripheral vision, usually in both eyes.

Tunnel vision in the advanced stages.

Severe eye pain, nausea and redness in the eye (more common in acute cases, such as angle-closure glaucoma).

 Blurred vision.

 Seeing halos around lights.

Treatments

Eye drops

These can reduce the formation of fluid in the front of the eye or increase its outflow, thereby reducing pressure.

Oral medications

Sometimes, when eye drops do not sufficiently control pressure, pills may be prescribed.

Surgery and laser treatments

These procedures can improve drainage to lower eye pressure and are used when medication is not sufficient.

Regular eye exams are key
